    Notes:

    From researcher Mona Rainville:

In my humble oopinion, you are most likely looking for a child whose mother is either a LACOMBE or a BROUILLETTE, which are the names of the godparents. Carolus LACOBE = Charles LACOMBE, and Delima DOUILLETTE - Rose de Lima BROUILLETTE. (Don't ask me how I know this...)

Priests routinely wrote "parents unknown" instead of revealing the identity of the birth mother, and exposing her to shame. But if on top of it the priest add that the child is a bastard, then he must know the parents are not married. Ergo, he knows at least the mother... And so much for protecting the child from shame.

Had this been 50 or 100 years earlier, I would have ventured another explanation. It was then routine for catholic priests to indicate in their parish baptismal registers a child as a bastard when this child was born from a marriage not recognized by the church, as for example, a marriage between a catholic and a protestant.

Who knows, this might still be the case, in this case. After all, why write the child is from unknown parents, if you know the child is a bastard ? He'd have to have known the mother, at least, and know that she was not married to the father. See what I mean ?

It was not unusual for such children to be put up for adoption, and to be adopted by relatives, sometimes distant, but sometimes the actual siblings of the birth mother. The child rarely - if ever - carried the father's name. To make matters worse, it also happened sometimes that the godparents were related to the father, rather than to the mother.

Still, I can't see a real connection with Montreal, or with the Province of Quebec for that matter. The mother might have been born in the US, from parents born here. And the same could be true of the father.

This baptismal certificate does not state the date of birth. Perhaps this child was born months or even years prior to being baptized as a catholic.

Adopted in Ogdensburg, but birth location officially unknown.

Potential hit on 1851 Census, Caledonia, Prescott County: Father Godfrey, Mother Olive, brother William. While on the surface this seems like a good hit, there's an Ontario marriage record that shows this Joseph marrying an Ann Kinsman in 1859. This doesn't rule it out, but does make it less likely.
