  1. 1.  Sophia Amanda Dale was born on 21 Jul 1858 in Pleasant Hill, McLean, Illinois, United States; died on 13 May 1930 in Berkeley, Alameda, California, United States.

    Notes:

Sophia was only 13 when her parents died of pneumonia, within 3 days of each other. Also dying was her older sister, Lidia Emma. Sophia went to live with her oldest sister, Martha, who had married the Rev. Robert Lenington and gone to Brazil as Presbyterian missionaries. They were pioneers to Brazil in 1868. This determined Sophia to become a missionary, also. She returned to the U. S. to work her way through college, graduating from the Univ. of Illinois with her teaching credentials. Heeding the call of the church, and eager to rejoin her sister, Sophia was assigned to teach in the girls' school (later McKenzie University), in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where she met and married the Reverend James Theodore Houston.

Sophia married Rev. James Theodore Houston on 26 Apr 1883 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. James (son of Robert Houston and Rebecca Robinson) was born on 24 Jan 1847 in Olivesburg, Richland, Ohio, United States; died on 21 Jun 1929 in James St., Oakland, Alameda, California, United States.
