The late George Sydney Horace Lee Washington, a cousin several times removed of the 1st President of the USA, has argued for a blood link between Gospatric (III) and one William de Hertburn, who Mr Washington has suggested was probably another s of Gospatric (III) and who c 1182 acquired the manor of Wessyngton, Wessington or Washington, Co Durham. William de Hertburn was undoubtedly an ancestor of the Washington family. To support his argument Mr G. S H. L. Washington points out that William de Hertburn, who is also referred to as William de Wessington or Washington (he will henceforth be called William (I) de Washington), also owned the adjacent manor of Offerton, whose previous lord had been a Sir Patric. Mr Washington identifies Sir Patric with Patric of Dunbar, i.e., Gospatric (III), 2nd Earl of Dunbar. Again, William de Washington's grandson Sir Walter de Washington bore as his coat of arms not the celebrated bars and molets which George Washington 1st President of the USA employed as a bookplate, but the Dunbar lion 'differenced' (i.e., with a slight modification to signify such circumstances as its being used by a younger branch of the family, as may have been the case here).
