      A. Floyd Bennett, Winterset

Services for A. Floyd Bennett, 84, Winterset, who died Jan. 1 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, were held Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Brite officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.

Born in Douglas township of Madison County on Dec. 21, 1902, he was the son of Alfred Leaman and Olga Negus Bennett. He was a retired farmer and had spent his lifetime in Madison County.

He was married to Maude Reid at DeSoto on Thanksgiving Day of 1930 and the couple lived on a farm near the old Bennett schoolhouse.

Survivors include a wife; a daughter-in-law, Mabel Bennett Massey of Broomfield, Colo.; a brother, James W. Bennett of Winterset; a sister, Jose Hoskins of Winterset; three grandchildren, Katherine Bennett Chabino, James Andrew Bennett and Daniel Mark Bennett; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son.

Floyd was a neat person. He accepted me and the different way I did things. He never had been involved in "church," but he never gave us a bad time about it. He joked and was friendly, always trying to stir up something in the stores. He did all the driving and the shopping.

    3. [S5352860279] History of Madison County 1879, A - C.
The old stone house located north and west of Winterset, Iowa, near the old stone school house known today as the "Bennett Place," was built by my great-grandfather and his son, Seymore Church. They moved to the area from Ohio before 1849.

My grandfather, L. M. Fisher, who married to Seymore's sister, Mary Jane, came with them or very soon after. He went on across the river and west and took land near where Macksburg is now.

They had to build some kind of a house and get the family settled because when the '49ers went West in the "gold rush," he went with them. However, I never heard of any bags of gold.

My mother was born June 27, 1869. She told me about going to Grandpa Church's when she was three or four years old. They had quarried the limestone out of the ground, made it into blocks and built that good sized house and the spring house, where the water came out of the hillside and flows through a wooden trough where they set the milk, cream and butter. This kept things cool on the hottest days. The cool water ran through the barn lot so chickens and other animals could drink. If my mother were living now, she would be 114 years old this June 27, 1984, and would make the old stone house at least that old. I think the age of this unique landmark can be set between 125-130 years and doubt if there is another farmhouse in this country with a milkhouse using natural resources for cooling purposes.

I am Vivan L DeMar, daughter of Hattie and W G Demar. I presently live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, having moved here from Illinois in 1957.

Note from Mabel Riegle Bennett Massey -- This is the house that John grew up in and Maude and Floyd lived in till they moved to Winterset in the early 1960s. Floyd lived there as he was growing up also. The spring and spring house were still being used when I married into the family. There was no well on the farm so all their water came from the spring, including water for the livestock in the barn yard. The house went into disrepair after Floyd and Maude moved to town. It was built against the hillside, with two rooms down and two up. You could walk right out on top of the hill from the upper bedroom.
