  Charles was a Lt with the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and then later with the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, he served on the staffs of Brig. General William S. Smith 1861 & 1862 and then with Major General John McA. Palmer. He was a civil engineer by trade. He served as a Quartermaster and Topographical Engineer during the War.
